Barrier Gate Arm Does Not Lock After Closing: Causes and Solution
If a barrier gate arm closes normally but can still be pushed up and down by hand, the problem is usually related to the arm’s closing position rather than a failed motor.
For HKGRAM barrier gates, this issue can occur when the barrier arm is not correctly adjusted to the horizontal position after installation or after changing the motor direction. The control board may detect that the arm has not fully reached its closed position, so the motor does not enter the expected locked state.
This guide explains how to identify the problem and how to restore the locking function.
What Happens When the Barrier Arm Does Not Lock?
Under normal operation, a barrier arm should stop at its designed horizontal position when the gate closes. The mechanism should then hold the arm securely in place.
When the arm is slightly above or below the correct horizontal angle, the control system may interpret the position as incomplete. As a result, the motor and mechanism may not lock the arm as expected.
The practical symptom is easy to recognize:
- The barrier opens and closes normally.
- The arm reaches an apparently closed position.
- After closing, the arm can still be lifted by hand.
- The barrier does not provide the expected mechanical resistance.
At a parking entrance, this can create a security problem because a person may be able to manually raise the arm without a normal opening command.
Why Does This Problem Happen?
1. The Barrier Arm Is Not Horizontally Adjusted
One of the most common causes is incorrect horizontal positioning of the barrier arm.
HKGRAM barrier gates are normally factory-adjusted for the correct horizontal closing angle. In a standard installation, the customer should not need to change these settings.
However, the position can be affected during installation. This may happen when the arm is mounted at the wrong angle, when the arm mechanism is manually adjusted, or when the motor direction is changed and the closing position is not recalibrated.
Even a small angle difference can affect the position detection of the barrier mechanism.
2. The Motor Direction Was Changed Without Rechecking the Arm Position
Some installations require the motor direction or installation orientation to be changed.
After changing the motor direction, it is important to check the actual resting position of the arm.
The control system must recognize the correct fully closed position. Simply changing the motor direction is not enough if the mechanical position of the arm is no longer correctly aligned.
3. Incorrect Control Board Parameters
If the horizontal position is correct but the arm still does not lock, check the relevant control board parameters.
For HKGRAM barrier gates, the recommended setting for this specific issue is to adjust parameters L6–L9 to 15.
These settings should be changed carefully, and the correct procedure should be followed to ensure that the new values are saved and applied.
How to Fix a Barrier Gate Arm That Can Be Lifted After Closing
Follow these steps to restore the locking function.
Step 1: Check the Arm Position
First, close the barrier gate and inspect the arm from the side.
The arm should be in the correct horizontal position when fully lowered.
Do not assume that a position that looks approximately horizontal is necessarily correct. If the barrier has recently been installed, the arm has been repositioned, or the motor direction has been changed, pay particular attention to this adjustment.
Step 2: Check the L6 And L9 Parameters
Access the HKGRAM barrier gate control board and locate parameters L6 to L9.
For this particular HKGRAM configuration, set the relevant values to:
L6 = 15
L9 = 15
Confirm the settings after adjustment.
These values are specific to the HKGRAM control system discussed in this troubleshooting case and should not be assumed to apply to barrier gates from other manufacturers.
Step 3: Confirm the Settings
After entering the new values, make sure the control board has accepted and saved the settings.
Do not immediately test the barrier without confirming that the parameter changes have been stored.
Step 4: Power the Barrier Gate Off and On
After confirming the parameters, switch the barrier gate power off and restart the system.
A power restart allows the control board to initialize with the updated settings.
Step 5: Test the Closing and Locking Function
Operate the barrier several times.
When the arm reaches the fully closed position, check whether it remains securely locked.
The arm should no longer be freely lifted by hand after the barrier has completed its closing cycle.
For a parking lot application, this test is especially important because the arm must remain in the closed position unless the controller gives an opening command.
What Should Installers Check After Reversing the Motor Direction?
When changing the motor direction, do not only check whether the arm moves up and down correctly.
The following points should also be checked:
Closing Angle

Confirm that the barrier arm reaches the correct horizontal position.
Position Detection
Make sure the control board recognizes the arm as fully closed.
Mechanical Locking
After the arm stops, check whether the mechanism holds it securely.
Repeated Operation
Open and close the barrier several times to make sure the problem does not return after repeated cycles.
This is especially important when a barrier is installed in a new parking system or when the motor mechanism has been reconfigured.
Why Correct Arm Alignment Matters
A barrier gate is not controlled only by the visible movement of the arm. The control system also relies on the relationship between the motor position, mechanical mechanism, and the expected end position.
If the arm is not correctly aligned, the system may stop at a position that looks acceptable to the installer but is not recognized as the proper fully closed position.
That is why simply tightening the motor or manually forcing the arm downward is not a reliable solution.
The correct approach is to first verify the mechanical horizontal position and then check the relevant control board settings.
Troubleshooting Checklist
Before replacing the motor or control board, check these items:
- Is the barrier arm correctly aligned horizontally?
- Was the arm position changed during installation?
- Was the motor direction recently reversed?
- Are parameters L6–L9 correctly set to 15 for the applicable HKGRAM configuration?
- Were the new settings confirmed and saved?
- Was the barrier power restarted after changing the parameters?
- Does the arm remain locked after several complete open/close cycles?
In many cases, these checks can resolve the issue without replacing major components.
Important Installation Note
HKGRAM barrier gates are normally factory-adjusted before shipment, so a standard installation should not require unnecessary changes to the factory settings.
If the problem appears after installation or after changing the motor direction, check the arm’s horizontal position and the control board parameters before assuming that the motor or control board is defective.
If the arm still does not lock after the above adjustments, the installation should be inspected further for mechanical alignment or other control-system issues rather than repeatedly changing parameters.
Correct arm positioning and proper parameter settings are essential for reliable barrier gate operation and for preventing unauthorized manual lifting of a closed barrier arm.
